Location Information

The region is an outstanding example of Cretan beauty and hospitality. It offers all the amenities of modern life, but retains the feel of traditional Cretan village life, and embraces visitors with a welcome that is unmatched in Europe. Makrigialos has one of the best climates in Europe, with around 325 days of sun per year. Winters are short and mild, and are followed by delightfully warm and long summers.

Makrigialos (officially spelled Makry-Gialos) is one of the quieter, less developed destinations on Crete, with some of the best beaches in east Crete. The local economy is based as much on agriculture as it is on tourism, and when the summer season ends, local business owners look to the olive harvest, which generates some of the finest olive oil in the world. The village boasts an excellent selection of bars, restaurants, and tavernas, many fronting onto the beach. There is also a small fishing harbour - a pleasant place to stroll around, with its own patch of sandy beach and a cluster of waterfront bars, tavernas and restaurants. The people of Makrigialos pride themselves not only on their Greek nationality, but more especially on their Cretan heritage, in an area that is home to Minoan, Venetian, and Roman ruins, the former dating as far back as 1400 B.C. More \'recent\' evidence of habitation can be found at the Kapsa Monastery, perched on the hill-side where Pervolakia gorge emerges at the coast, 7km east of town, and believed to have been founded in the 15th century. Contemporary culture is represented by timeless traditional Cretan villages, such as Pefki and Agios Stefanos, which dot the gorge-cut mountain sides.

Makrigialos on the south east coast of Crete, is free from mass tourism and noisy crowds, secluded in beautiful mountains, with extensive sandy beaches overlooking the southern Mediterranean Sea. The area is an excellent example of one of the few places in Europe where you can find majestic mountains close to the sea, within a few kilometers of wonderful sandy beaches.

Water sports, including pedal boats, towed inflatables, water-skiing, and jet-skis, are available from the main beach, and the beach below the hotels. The Poseidon boat, based in the harbour, can be chartered by groups of up to 8 people for fishing trips and Koufonisi island cruises. The Sasteria public observatory in Agios Stefanos, in the mountains above Makrigialos, collects some impressive reviews, and is rated number one attraction on Crete, on the leading review site TripAdvisor. Art workshops are also available at the observatory. Music and dancing events are staged throughout the summer, including traditional Cretan nights and the prestigious Casa dei Mezzo music festival. Not just an excellent beach resort. Good roads and a central position make the Makrigialos area an ideal base from which to explore east Crete. Witness the real Crete, Makrigialos is described as \"...one of these special corners of the earth – a little-known gem of a place that is all the more charming because it is rather undiscovered...\" in online travel guide Simon Seeks. A day-trip drive along the north coast, within easy reach of Makrigialos, and Makrigialos itself, appear in the top 5 things to do in Crete in an article published by Cheap flights website.
