Escape to unspoiled Costa Rica
Karyl C.

My husband and 2 boys spent 4 nights here and we thoroughly enjoyed it. We have done all-inclusives to many different countries and wanted something that felt more pure and unfiltered. Nadia was ready for us when we arrived despite being 1-1/2 hrs delayed due to the crazy SJO to Puerto Viejo traffic (it was holy week in CR and Spring break for us). We are surrounded by the sounds of nature. The house is close to everything (coffee shops, restaurants, beach), yet it is tucked away and secure that you don't feel like a stranger may accidentally stray to your door. There is a safe. The hot water is very refreshing (a luxury bc not every place has it). We did not cook but the kitchen provided a wonderful space to cut papayas, mangoes, and pineapples we had bought at the roadside stands. So ripe and different from tropical fruits in the states. The washer is on the property, but no dryer and Nadia was so helpful helping us get a small load washed and dried so my son did not run out of t shirts. The room is very clean, and the bathroom is very well designed. The bedroom w the King size bed has the Air conditioning and the other one with the queen that has a lovely window And ceiling fan. If you are used to central air conditioning it may take you a day or two to become acclimated with the weather. A friend recommended not to use body lotion after the shower (Unnecessary in CR humidity), and you will find that towards the end of your stay you may not even need to turn on the AC in the room, and staying in a Holiday Inn near SJO on our last night we felt like the AC was freezing because we had been so used to the natural air. Towels provided were fluffy. You may want to bring an extra towel or two for the beach from home. There is no dishwasher, so be prepared to wash by hand, and the tap well water is not drinkable, so drop by the grocery store and pick up some bottles of water early in your trip. Minimal bugs around the property but we still sprayed ourselves with natural lemongrass-based repellent and were not bitten. Sitting on the hanging hammock under the shade and dozing off after our 8 am zip line trip (via Adventuras--very close and they pick you up) was the sweetest nap i have had in 10 yrs). We also rafted Pacuare river and they can pick you up. There is a coffee shop immediately outside the property (different owner; i think) that sells pastries, coffee, and chocolate).Beach across the street was very pleasant. PURA VIDA!!

Comfortable, economical and relaxing cottage
Mary Kay A.

Overall, this was a delightful place to stay. The AC worked well, it had two bedrooms, bathroom and kitchen. It was off the beaten path surrounded by jungle and within walking distance of a fabulous coffee/chocolate shop, little restaurant and the beach. It was nice for us to be a little out of town....more quiet and secluded. Our host was helpful and friendly. I wouldn't recommend arriving after dark as there are minimal outdoor lights, it's on a dirt road and the reception sign is small. We had some trouble with the WiFi while we were there, but Nadia reported they were working on it. We had to go to the reception area to get WiFi. Fortunately, many of the restaurants and the coffee shop had wifi so it wasn't a huge hardship. I would recommend it.

Private Villa in the Costa Rica Rain Forest
steve d.

The private villa I rented had it's own gated enclosed yard, with lots of plants, a BBQ, outdoor shower, hammock, nice table and chairs. The road getting there is gravel and dirt and gets pretty narrow near the villa, but wasn't a problem for a regular size car. It's close to the main road, but far enough away so that you feel like you are in the rain forest, because you are. There is a good restaurant right at the main road. The walk to a beautiful beach was about 5 minutes. If you wanted a better beach to hang out on it was another 5 minute walk south or if you have a bunch of stuff you can drive. It is a small villa, with the kitchen and a table in the main room. It has a new refrigerator. Has a nice size bathroom with shower. Two bedrooms with a TV and AC in the master. The TV didn't have a great selection of channels, but you probably didn't go to CR to watch TV. The one AC worked well enough to cool the villa. I'm not use to humidity, so having a AC was important to me and they aren't that common in the area. In general I think places to stay are older and more rustic in this area. Being a newer construction, I would say the property is above average. The main part of town is a little longer walk, so I mostly drove in. The town and people are very unique. It was my first time in CR and I'm glad I started my trip in Puerto Viejo. The Owner Nadia is very friendly and helpful. I had a bunch of questions and need some extra help setting up my cell phone. She went above and beyond helping me out.

Romantic getaway

Puerto Viejo turned out to be our favorite spot in Costa Rica, and that’s mostly because of our stay at La Perla del Caribe. Beware, Puerto Viejo is the opposite of all-inclusive beach destinations. It will be something different and incredibly better. You'll experience a laid-back fascinating small community, little villages, surrounded by amazing virgin rainforest and pristine beaches. Take a walk from home and just go inside the jungle trails..!! Frequent guests home were toucans, green parrots, oropendulas, hummingbirds, butterflies, fireflies at night, sloths, monkeys, wattusas, squirrels...! Than, if you are used to a bit of comfort while traveling and would not like bugs sleeping with you....and if you won’t dislike AC when needed, speed wi-fi connection, clean white linens, marvellous king size bed, warm hot water... and you’re looking for a lovely and peaceful lodge close to the beach... come with confidence and reserve in advance, because they have just 3 houses for rent and you'll be sorry to miss staying here. I looked around a lot, but I was not able to find other nice lodges, or anything similar to this one, starting from Puerto Viejo to Manzanillo. Nadia and Antonio, Thanks again for your friendly and warm welcome in your house and for our perfect holidays!
