Description

This is a charming, two-story home across from the 1835 Congregational Church in historic South Britain and the surrounding foothills at the border of Litchfield County. It is an easy 75-minutes away from NYC by car and twp hours by bus - Peter Pan bus leaves from Bus Terminal and as second stop arrives at Southbury's bus terminal, one mile from rental home.with pick-up and drop-off available at no charge.

The two-story carriage house was built in 1795 as part of the main house. The first floor space for the carriage is now a very large living room and adjacent television viewing area (bedroom 3 at night). A kitchen and dining room wing was added with views out to the grounds. The second floor is reached by an open stair. The former hayloft and stable master's quarters are now a super-sized master bedroom, a sun-room office with windows facing 3 directions, a second smaller bedroom, a modern bathroom with shower, and a washer/dryer area.

Adjacent to the Carriage House is a 450 sq. ft. Greenhouse Party Room with a profusion of plants, an over-sized fire place, lounge for up to fifty and dining seating for up to thirty, buffet and bar on upper level, and views opening to to the lawns and gardens. This space is perfect for parties, meetings, conferences, buffet dinners, even weddings on the lawns. This space, if available, can be rented by the day if you would like to have it.

About the Owner

Jay Carow, a currently practicing architect and former professor of architecture at the Illinois Institute of Technology and universities in Malaysia and Iraq. Hed relocated his firm from Chicago to Southbury in 2010. Jay has had his own firm since 1969. You can find examples of his work and a short biography at the website for Carow Architect Plus. Widowed in 2012 he is now enjoying a second bachelorhood and most weekends in NYC or month's vacations around the world.

Jay Carow purchased this House in 2010

Why Jay Carow chose Southbury
This historic home is a jewel set in a cluster of other jewels surrounded by rolling hills with a cascading river, wildlife, flowers, and stately trees. It is a wonderful place to live to live and visit if you love history, tranquility and nature. It is easily reached from Manhattan - 90 minutes by car and just over 2 hours by bus, and 50 minutes by bus from Hartford.

What makes this House unique
Of special quality are the views out to the lawns and forest from the glassed-in and sky-lighted solarium with its huge fireplace, once the summer cooking place. The room and this room and the lawns it opens onto have been used for multiple weddings, family gatherings and evants of all kinds.

The historic village's Congregational Church is across the street and worthy of a visit. Within ten minutes walk are dozens of hiking trails and a few miles away there's Woodbury, the first settlement in the area founded in 1673 and now the beginning of CT's Antiques Trail and beyond all of Litchfield County.

Home away from home
Katie G.

We loved staying here with our toddler. Jay was a great host and offered us a bottle of wine upon arrival. We had everything we needed to be comfortable and everyone was so friendly and welcoming. The house is only 10 min. from our family and we loved having friends over to eat outside after the baby went down. And she loved running around the beautiful yard and playing in the gazebo. We will be making Jay's carriage house our home away from home next time we go back to visit.

Spent long weekend here with our dog who loved the big lawn the the nearby dog park, which is enormous. Jay was a great host and we played tennis with him as well as some drinks. Fascinating host with great stories. Would definitely rent again.

First time using this site. We had a great experience! We pulled up to a beautiful home and was greeted by Jay. He is very nice and eager to help. The home is warm and inviting. It is close to so many cool places, hiking trails, antique shops, markets, and more! Wonderful stay. I Would love to stay again.

Great host
Jacob T.

We needed a weekend off and this was the perfect place. It is not to far from anything in Connecticut while being nice and quiet. The carriage house is well kept and pretty. The owner is gracious and kind. Enjoy your stay!
