Location Information

Ogliastra, with the beauty of its coastline and mountainous interior, is Sardinia\'s most recently-discovered tourist destination. This corner of the island, bounded by the mountains and the sea, offers an unlimited number of unique attractions for visitors. A paradise of remarkable beauty situated on the east coast of Sardinia: here Nature offers the best of itself. The name Ogliastra is said to come from the Olivastri, olive trees, found all over this area, though others say it\'s derived from the Agugliastra (or Pedra Longa), the limestone monolith on the coastline of Baunei. Ogliastra\'s coastline contains beautiful oases of sand wedged between the sea and the surrounding cliffs, and is one of the Mediterranean\'s most charming marine landscapes. Starting from the north, we come to sandy bays (cale) reachable only by boat or on foot, such as the famous Cala Luna, Cala Sisine, Cala Mariolu and Cala Goloritzé; further south we find interesting beaches such as those at Tancau, Orrì, Cea, the Marinas di Barisardo and Cardedu, Coccorrocci and the Golfo di Sarrala. The other magical side to Ogliastra is the Nature, which is still unspoilt and which gradually changes as you climb over the hills to arrive at the mountains of the Gennargentu, whose varied landscapes and rare beauty are very satisfying to gaze upon. A land which is best appreciated by the attentive and curious observer, rather than the normal tourist. In terms of history and archaeology, the whole area is very worthwhile to visit, with many Nuraghi, Domus de Janas, Fonti Sacre, Tombe dei Giganti and Menhir. On foot, by bike, on horseback, by car or 4WD you can follow trekking routes to discover places which you won\'t easily forget. If, on the other hand, you wish to see the splendid Ogliastra coastline from the sea, there are boats to take you there. Only the combination of sights and scents manages to fully describe Ogliastra\'s magic and harmony. You can\'t say you\'ve really visited Sardinia if you don\'t spend at least a few days in Ogliastra!

Sardinia, or in Italian \'Sardegna\', is not a mainstream Mediterranean destination but a sophisticated Italian island, west of mainland Italy and south of Corsica. With over 1000 miles of unspoilt coastline, it is renowned for beautiful beaches, translucent azure blue sea and fascinating rock formations. Yet being the second largest Mediterranean island, it has so much more to offer with an interesting history, wild mountainous interior, vibrant towns with local traditions, colourful festivals. The people are warm and friendly and enjoying themselves in a way of life. A warm welcome awaits you in Sardinia. Sardinia can be reached by just a 2 hour flight from the UK. There are now direct flights from many regional airports including Gatwick, Stansted, Bristol, Manchester, Nottingham East Midlands, Leeds Bradford, Edinburgh and Dublin. There are 3 airports in Sardinia: Olbia in the north east, Cagliari in the south and Alghero in the north west. Sardinia is an island that allows you to truly experience the very essence of Mediterranean life. The cuisine offers a rich repertoire of dishes, heavily influenced by the country̢۪s various neighbours including Corsica and Italy, accompanied by impressive local wines. The mixing of game and farm produce (traditional with inland towns) and fish and seafood (traditional with coastal towns) result in a combination of flavours and appearance that is unique to Sardinia.

The tourist port of the Marina di Arbatax is located in the centre of the east coast of Sardinia, 8 NM from Capo Montesanto (to the north is the Golfo di Orosei) and right under Capo Bellavista inside the large Porto di Arbatax, served by ferries from Genoa and Civitavecchia. Secure and accessible in all weathers and for boats of all draughts. Near the port you can admire the ancient torre Spagnola, and the fascinating Rocce Rosse sticking out of the sea. You can visit several seaside attractions in the area surrounding Arbatax: the enchanting Cala Moresca, the very pretty bay of Porto Frailis, the long beach of the Lido di Orrì, with its white sand and crystal clear water, and finally the beautiful beach of Cea and its red porphyry sea stacks. Overlooking the port of Arbatax there are the impervious and fascinating mountains of the Gennargentu, whose landscapes are characterised by huge woods full of many different scents. In honour of such beauty, the Ferrovie della Sardegna with the Trenino Verde (Little Green Train) organises daily trips starting from the station of Arbatax to the mountains and their villages, through wild and unspoilt countryside. The modern Tourist Port of Baunei and Santa Maria Navarrese, inaugurated in 1998, is a welcoming and safe harbour on the east coast of Sardinia which can accommodate up to 340 vessels of up to 30m in length. The well-qualified and friendly staff and the range of services offered will meet all sailors\' needs. From June 2005, the Port has the Pequod, a swing lift to enable disabled people to board boats, thus becoming the first accessible port in Sardinia. In 2006, for the second time in a row, the Tourist Port won the prestigious Bandiera Blu award for marinas, awarded for the quality of the mooring, services, safety standards, care of the environment and availability of information. Each year the port has attracted more visitors thanks to both the quality of its services and the magical setting in which its located, a little bay with its view of Santa Maria Navarrese\'s Saracen tower and its beach.

Sardinia has something for everyone from the jet set world famous Costa Smeralda, with breathtaking scenery and exclusive hotels, to the unspoilt south coast with many deserted beaches and Caribbean-like turquoise sea. Wherever you are in Sardinia, there will be a stunning coastline with beautiful bays and beaches, vibrant yet uncommercialised towns and villages, a mountainous interior with wonderful views of the island, refreshing lakes and waterfalls, and an interesting history. For example, there are around 7,000 ‘Nuraghi’, (mysterious stone dwellings dating back 3,500 years), throughout the island as a permanent reminder of its prehistoric occupation, as well as numerous examples of Roman architecture as a catalogue of their dominance. We love the island, its people and its way of life. Let us tempt you with sailing and swimming in turquoise sea (Active Sardinia). Learn about its 4000 year history, its archaeology, architecture, flora and fauna (Sardinia history and culture). Discover its traditions and festivals (Sardinia Festivals) and experience its mouth-watering foods and wines (Taste Sardinia). So book your next holiday with us and experience Sardinia with Just Sardinia, the island specialist.

Ogliastra, a land of magical beauty, situated on the east side of Sardinia. This territory, situated between the summits of the Gennargentu and the Tyrrhenian sea, is considered one of Sardinia\'s most fascinating. It\'s a vast area, more than 1800 square kilometres, with a small section of low-lying coastal plains and lots of hills and mountains which dominate the coastline and the interior. Ogliastra is comprised of 23 small comuni (municipalities) of which only 3 have more than 4000 inhabitants and has one of Italy\'s lowest population densities (32 inhabitants/km2).
