Location Information

territories Mountains, rocks, crystalline sea: this is the landscape that is found in the territories that make up this section of Sardinia, that is, the Ogliastra with its ‘Tacchi’ (mountain outcrops), desert areas and small isolated coves; the Gennargentu with its snow-covered mountain tops and its skies, playground to the majestic golden eagle; and finally the Supramonte, an uncontaminated paradise of still unexplored caves, centuries-old forests and archaeological and naturalistic treasures. In these areas the keen sports enthusiasts can find their dream: in fact, there is all the space needed to practice equestrian sports, even long rides on the beaches, to climb up the tall, vertical rocky walls that look out onto the sea, to do a variety of surfing activities, to go trekking and go on mountain bike excursions, all pleasant alternatives to visit otherwise inaccessible areas.

Gennargentu means \"silver doors\", from the colour of the schistose rock that characterises its geological formation. Its mountains indeed contain a unique microcosm: its high peaks, that go up to 1834 metres above sea level at Punta La Marmora, face onto uncontaminated nature from where the main watercourses of the eastern Sardinian area, the Cedrino and Flumendosa originate. The flora that enriches the territory is in a considerable part constituted by endemic species such as the rare brooms of Pantelleria, Corsica and Moris, but not forgetting the meadows of thyme, with the perfume of the helichyrsum and the aromatic bushes, flown over by the golden eagle, the Eurasian black vulture, the raven, the peregrine falcon and the bearded vulture. Castled at 910 metres, we find the town of Tonara whose name is strictly associated with the production of nougat (torrone), which is later dedicated during a feast on Easter Monday, but also to craftsmanship in general, with an ample production of wood from the chestnut tree, juniper and wild cherry. Its main square is dedicated to its poet Peppino Mereu, while along the roads stones are met which have been sculpted and carved by the contemporary sculptor Pinuccio Sciola. In Desulo, however, another characteristic town of the territory, in what was originally poet Antioco Casula\'s (nicknamed Montanaru) home, an ethnographic museum has been set up. In the outskirts of the town it is possible to admire some testimonies of nuragic epoch, such as the nuraghe Ura \'e Sole and along impervious paths to ascend towards Bruncu Spina. A feast in October is devoted to chestnuts in Aritzo, another characteristic town, specialised also in the manufacture of wood and whose outskirts contain large forests.

The Ogliastra stretches from the high basin of the Flumendosa up to the eastern slope of the Gennargentu, facing out onto the Tyrrheanian Sea with its tall, rocky coast, of spectacular beauty. It also includes, on its southern borders, a part of the historical territory of the ancient marquisate of Quirra. It is the least populated province in Italy: the territory, almost exclusively mountainous, is to a large extent covered by woods and pastures. Even if now it has also become an important tourist centre, the Ogliastra also continues to live off its traditional activities such as its sheep rearing (most tasty is the pecorino cheese and other cheeses, such as the cas\'e fitta and the casu axeru), its agriculture and wine-production (the famous Cannonau of Jerzu), and craftsmanship. The awareness of the importance of safeguarding the territory has pushed the Regional Government and the Municipalities to invest in the reforestation and in the exploitation of the wood areas, where it is possible to go on excursions to discover its naturalistic and archaeological patrimony. The variety of the coastal landscape is one of the great wealths of the territory. In the north the vertical calcareous cliffs are found in small, silent coves, such as the famous Cala Goloritzè, accessible only by boat or on foot: Ogliastra is the land of trekking par excellence. More to the south, in the territories of Arbatax, Tortolì and Gairo, the wide sandy beaches such as Cea, San Gemiliano, Orrì, and Musculedda, alternate with the rocks of red porphyry, granite or to the unusual black beach of Coccorocci. The Ogliastra is one of those marvellous places in which, between the mountain and the sea, at every bend we discover a different landscape.

The eno-gastronomic commodities are what characterise this section of the island: the fish dishes of the Cagliaritano, such as the burrida and the cassola, the olives and the oils of the Parteolla, of changing colours of green to gold, the intense flavours of the different types of cheeses of the Trexenta, famous at a national level, the good quality of citrus fruit of the Sarrabus and the fruit of the Gerrei, all commodities found on the menùs of local restaurants. A world of typical flavours that go from the commodities of the sea to those of the fertile Sardinian lands, to delight the palates of all those that stop by for a taste and to enrich their knowledge and experiences. territories The sea and the mountains, natural landscapes for antonomasia, are found reunited in the representative territories of this north-eastern section of Sardinia that contains Baronie, Gallura, Montacuto and Nuorese. These areas are characterised by the presence of coloured beaches, hemmed by delicate vegetation, such as those of the Emerald Coast, or by tall hills with rocks and fauna of true wealth. But it is always the towns that provide the pulling force for the Sardinian sub regions, with their uses and traditional customs, with the variety of their eno-gastronomic delicacies and with monuments to be visited and admired to discover another piece in the island’s jigsaw.

It is often said that Sardinia, thanks to its variety of landscapes, traditions and accents is not an island, but rather a continent. However, it happens that someone who gets to the island may fall in love with a village, a beach, and life rhythms and has not the curiosity of discovering anything else. We advice you, instead, to move and discover villages, naturalistic oases, archaeological treasures and traditional festivals, which our island loves to share with its visitors. It won̢۪t be necessary to cover great distances so as to carve out a holiday inside the holiday, passing quickly from the sea to the mountain, from trekking to artistic tourism, from an archaeological site to the salted mullet role festival. You could choose between thematic itineraries (wine routes, literary landscapes, Romanesque churches, natural parks) or let yourself be guided by your own curiosity, by the call of a patronal feast , by the local people̢۪s suggestions or by your travel-mates. The most important thing is to be willing to encounter and let yourself be enchanted by the constant vanishing of a landscape in another.
