Old Gaol Cottage is 2 BR Vacation Home Rental a chequered stone listed building of character built in 1859. It originally served as the jail and police station from 1860-1954 and is situated in the picturesque village of CerneAbbas, famous for its 2000 year old Cerne giant carved into the chalk hillside. Flanked by the "old court" and "sergeant's quarters", this mid - terrace cottage has been lovingly restored and professionally decorated. The English Tourism Board has awarded us a rare "five - star" rating. This charming cottage sleeps 4 - 6 people in two upstairs BR. This Lovely Cottage has comfortable lounge, modern kitchen, large dining room, full bathroom upstairs with guest WC on the main level. Beautiful container garden in rear courtyard.

The village was selected as one of the top five villages and the only village in the West Country for the prestigious Country Life Magazine's 2004 award for England's Favorite Village. Cerne Abbas is located 8 miles North of Dorchester and 15 miles from the English Channel, and has a population of about 700 people. The village has an impressive array of shops including three fine pubs, two tearooms, a grocery store, antique shop, post office and several gift shops. Many historical sites are within a five minute walk from the cottage: the remains of the Benedictine Abbey founded in 987 AD, a fourteenth century tithe barn (now Barton Farm), St. Augustine's Well, Circa 600 AD, and St. Mary's Church, built about 1300 AD. On Abbey Street is the finest row of Tudor homes in Dorset. One of these, The Pitchmarket, was home to Thomas Washington -- Uncle of George Washington. The countryside is excellent for walking, with many footpaths and bridleways over the chalk hills and through secluded valleys. Only 15 miles away is The English Channel, with its seaside resorts, dramatic cliffs and sheltered coves awaiting exploration.

Policy

Payment is 50% non-refundable deposit due upon booking to reserve requested dates. The remaining 50% due four weeks before occupation. Cancellation after final payment may not be refundable. Travel insurance is recommended.

Lettings from Saturday to Saturday, commencing at 4:00 P.M., and ending at 10:30 A.M.

Make cheques payable to Mr. D. & Mrs. J. Kirkpatrick or direct bank deposit can be arranged upon request. All linens and towels are provided Non-smokers only please. We regret that we cannot accept pets On-street parking available in front of the cottage.
